The Guatemalan Army is holding a parade this Sunday, June 26, in Guatemala City with land, sea and air forces in commemoration of the 151st anniversary of the creation of the armed institution.

Traditionally, the parade was held on June 30, Army Day. According to Rubén Téllez, a military spokesman, this year it was organized four days before to avoid traffic congestion on the streets of the capital.

The march came out after a two-year break caused by the covid-19 pandemic. In 2020 and 2021, President Alejandro Giammattei canceled it to prevent coronavirus infections.

"Has no sense. We would be promoting the breaking of the regulations that we have imposed, ”said the president in June 2021.

The parade started at 9 a.m. from the monument to Pope John Paul II, in zone 13 of the capital, crossed Las Américas avenue, traveled over La Reforma avenue and headed to Campo de Marte, in zone 5.

The tour was also attended by members of the Fire Department of the Municipality of Guatemala, the National Civil Police and the Municipal Traffic Police of the capital city.
